Prison H15
An abandoned prison located somewhere in France.
On the ground where the prison stands, was once a monastery built in the 13th century.
During the French revolution the monks were exiled, but the
property still remained as a monastery.
In 1812 plans were made to convert the monastery into a workhouse for the poor and elderly.
Due to many delays in building the accommodations for 400 men and women, work did not begin until 1817.
At the time there was a lack of prisons in the area and sentences were being
cut short due to overcrowding.
So the Interior Minister ordered the work be stopped, and to transform it into a prison instead.
In the 1820s it started serving as a penitentiary
It housed up to 965 men and 535 women.
The prison was mostly served for prisoners who were medium sentenced between 6 months to 2 years. And about 10% with longer sentences of more than 10 years of imprisonment.
The prison closed its doors in 2011 and was left in decay till september 2016.
Now the building has been completely demolished and plan on using it as an archeological site to find remains of the monastery.
After that they plan on building a new penitentiary for 2021.
A picture of the penitentiary from what remained of ancient the monastery in the 19th century.
