Chateau Miranda

A beautiful 19th century Neo-Gothic style castle.

History tells the chateau was built in 1866 for the duke of Liedekerke
de Beaufort and his family to be used as a summer residence.

During WO II it was occupied by german forces. It is said that d
uring the Battle of the Bulge, there was also fighting on the property.

In the 50s it was taken over by the Belgian railway company SNCB and was used as an orphanage and holiday camp for the sickly children.

In 1970 the chateau was then only used as a summer camp.

Even tough it was a holiday camp for the children between 5-14 years old. It was a strict regime. The chateau was first run by female officials and the children were obligated to wear uniforms. The property had a small football pitch set up and the fountain in the garden was converted into a swimming pool.

Over the years many people began to have health problems due to a toxic mold in the chateau. Also regarding the state of the chateau, many renovations had to be undergone too.

While looking for investors to buy the chateau and to transform it into a hotel.
But the costs were to much for the investors, so they decided to abandon everything and close its doors in 1991.

Since then the chateau was left in decay and began to be no longer safe for visitors and urban explorers, ceilings collapsing, floorboards rotten,...

The owner decided to make plans to demolish the chateau.
A lot of people were against it. So a petition started to avoid demolishing this beautiful piece of history.
